What You Get

  • Political Representation: Through our advocacy and campaigning, Friends of Seattle gives its members a political voice in the policy debates about transportation, housing, parks, and other issues that impact the livability and sustainability of Seattle. It's like being a member of a political party. Our goal is to build a political movement, a new generation of civic activists who hold our elected officials, civic leaders, and fellow citizens accountable.
  • Community: We're a community of ordinary people uniting to make Seattle the green, urban city we need, and we often organize events for our members and the public. It's always fun to come and meet other people who share your values. Right now, we have over 300 members and approximately 700 people on our email list.
  • Online Action Tools: Only members can participate in our online forums, comment on posts, or create an online profile. As we enhance this website, which is new, we'll be adding powerful tools and features, including member-blogging tools, an event calendar, member-created groups, photo galleries, enhanced user profiles, and more.
  • Stay Connected: Our members receive periodic email newsletters that include relevant news, event calendars, updates on legislation, and happenings in the Friends of Seattle organization. Email alerts notify members when to lobby their elected officials or contact the media.
  • Leadership Opportunities: Interested Friends of Seattle members have the opportunity to join our all-volunteer staff. People who have served in a leadership capacity for Friends of Seattle have gone on to work for elected officials, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations, among other things.

What We Want from You

  • Commitment to Friends of Seattle's Values: We're a community based on shared values. We don't always agree with each other and believe that healthy debate is a good thing, but our members generally agree with our vision for Seattle, our past endorsements, and our advocacy. If you feel the same way, Friends of Seattle is for you; if not, then we're not.
  • Political Action: Members participate in the political process, however works best for them---by voting, talking about the issues with friends, writing elected officials, volunteering for political campaigns.
