Friends of Seattle Vows to Continue to Fight for the Surface/Transit Alternative
"Yesterday's victory is a promising start "
SEATTLE---Friends of Seattle vowed today to continue to fight for the surface/transit strategy for replacing the Viaduct and moving Seattle into the 21st century. "The voters have given us a clear mandate that they do not want to see another highway put on our waterfront," said FoS founder and president Gary Manca. "Yesterday's election was a clear victory for the surface/transit alternative, and a promising start to reclaiming the waterfront for the citizens of Seattle. We are really excited to work with community leaders and elected officials to give the voters what they want: a new way to move people and goods and a beautiful waterfront that serves the entire city, not just vehicles."
"We are very pleased with the announcement that Mayor Nickels, Governor Gregoire and King County Executive Ron Sims will be working collaboratively to develop a solution for the Alaskan Way corridor," Manca added. "We urge the state not to ignore the will of the people of Seattle, and are especially appreciative of the mayor's long term opposition of the re-build and Executive Sims' and Councilmember Steinbrueck's visionary support of the surface/transit option." Friends of Seattle will be collaborating with allies including the People's Waterfront Coalition, the Sierra Club, Feet First and Councilmember Steinbrueck to ensure that the surface/transit option remains on the table.
Friends of Seattle has been working to oppose a new elevated highway since early last fall. FoS volunteers have met with city councilmembers and state legislators to educate them about the benefits of surface/transit and how it would work. In February, FoS officially released a statement endorsing a "No and H*ll No" vote for yesterday's election. In addition, FoS mobilized its members to support the Not Another Elevated campaign by participating in phone-banking and doorbelling activities. The group also gave the Not Another Elevated Viaduct campaign a donation since the group was born, marking a major step forward for Friends of Seattle's political activities.
The surface/transit option is a multi-modal, cost-effective solution that promotes density, environmental sustainability, and downtown livability--core goals of Friends of Seattle. At a time of global warming, regional population growth, and rising housing costs, replacing the Alaskan Way Viaduct is more than a mere transportation problem.
Friends of Seattle is a membership-based advocacy group whose mission is to network together a community of voters who inspire elected officials to support a more urban, livable, and sustainable city. We organize community events, propose policy reforms, lobby elected officials, and endorse candidates for office.
