City Dismisses O'Brien's Complaint Against Rosencrantz Supporters (Publicola)

Friends of Seattle is in the news.

Erica C. Barnett, "Afternoon Fizz: City Dismisses O'Brien's Complaint Against Rosencrantz Supporters," Publicola (November 30, 2009)

The Seattle Ethics and Elections Commission has dismissed a complaintfiled by City Council member-elect Mike O’Brien in October. . . . Both Rosencrantz and Forward Seattle sent out thousands of mailers accusing O’Brien of wanting to “toll all city streets.” Both featured an unflattering image of O’Brien taken from the same Friends of Seattle video; both included images of toll booths on neighborhood streets; and both accused O’Brien of wanting tolls “everywhere.”

Head Tax Repealed (Publicola)

Erica C. Barnett, "Head Tax Repealed," Publicola (November 12, 2009)

Also this morning, the city council voted to repeal the employee hours tax, a $25-per-employee tax, paid by employers, that exempts employees who don’t drive to work alone. . . . Friends of Seattle sent a last-minute letter to the council earlier this week, pleading with council members to either vote against the repeal or to amend the law to merely suspend the tax temporarily and to track the economic impact of the repeal for a year.

I Misjudged Him (PubliCola)

Friends of Seattle is in the news.

Josh Feit, "I Misjudged Him," PubliCola (July 14, 2009)

PubliCola’s own Erica C. Barnett was the obvious winner at last night’s Friends of Seattle Mayoral debate. Density, Metro, the head tax—the lady knows her shit. (It was also pretty dynamite when she shut down the guy in the audience who had a question/wanted to give a speech about Israel. Sorry lefty Seattle, but somebody’s gotta draw the line. Blaming Seattle’s transportation woes and budget crisis on AIPAC is even a little lulu for this town.)

But Erica’s not on the ballot. And she did have the unfair advantage—as moderator—of controlling the microphone in the packed (100 people) back room at Belltown’s Spitfire club.

With Erica disqualified, we have to declare the  person on stage who gave the second best performance of the night the winner: Sierra Club leader Mike McGinn.

Pedestrian Plan Advisors Oppose "Head Tax" Repeal (PubliCola)

Friends of Seattle is in the news.

Erica C. Barnett, Pedestrian Plan Advisors Oppose “Head Tax” Repeal, Publicola (1 July 2009)

The members of the city-appointed Pedestrian Master Plan Advisory Group, along with the advocacy director of the Cascade Bicycle Club, the head of Great City, and the president of Friends of Seattle, just sent a letter to Mayor Greg Nickels and all nine members of the city council opposing a proposed (and probably inevitable) repeal of the employee hours tax, AKA the “head tax.” The tax is a $25-per-employee charge paid by employers, which includes an exemption for any employees who don’t drive to work alone.
